About RedCurtain

Software for amateur musical and drama groups, built by people who have spent decades in them.

Last updated 4 October 2026.

Why it exists

Amateur theatre runs on spreadsheets. A membership list in one, the audition sign-ups in another, the books in a third, and somebody’s inbox holding the only copy of who agreed to do front of house. It works, until the person holding the spreadsheets steps down — and then a season’s worth of knowledge leaves with them.

We have been in those committees for a long time, in several groups, doing those jobs. RedCurtain is the one place we always wanted: the register, the shows, the auditions, the casting, the rehearsal calls, the minutes and the books, in one system that the next committee inherits intact.

Who builds it

A small group of volunteers in South Australia, working on it in evenings and weekends. It is not a company with a sales team, and there is no venture capital behind it. That is the honest reason the pricing is what it is: we are not trying to grow fast enough to repay anybody.

How it is paid for

Running your group is free — members, shows, auditions, casting, rehearsals, meetings, minutes, the books. We take 0.25%, capped at $4.50, of whatever a group takes by card, and nothing at all on a payment under $5 or on money that never goes through a card. The pricing page shows the working, including the one competitor that is cheaper than us.

The money goes into the group’s own Stripe account, never ours. We never hold a group’s takings, which means we cannot lose them and cannot be slow returning them.

Use as much or as little as you like

There is no all-or-nothing switch. A group can keep its register here and nothing else. It can run the committee and the books and leave the productions out. It can take auditions through whatever it already uses and simply list them here so people can find them. Or it can run the lot.

Nothing you leave alone gets in the way, and turning a part on later does not mean starting again — the parts know about each other when you use them and do not nag you when you don’t.

You are not locked in

Everything your group puts in is yours, and you can take a complete copy of it out whenever you like, in a format a spreadsheet opens. Not on request, not after a phone call about why you’re leaving, and not a subset chosen by us: the register, the productions, the casting, the attendance, the books, the lot.

We would rather earn a group’s next season than hold its records hostage for it. Software that is hard to leave is software that stops having to be good.

Where it runs

The application and the database are hosted in Sydney. Everything about where your information goes and who can see it is in the privacy policy, which is specific rather than reassuring.

If RedCurtain stops

The fair question, and the one we would want answered before putting a membership list anywhere. We are a small volunteer effort and we are not going to pretend that carries no risk.

Two things follow from how it is built. Your group’s money is already in your group’s own Stripe account, under your own login, and does not depend on us existing. And your data is yours: if we ever wind down, we will give every group a complete export of its own records with reasonable notice, in a format a spreadsheet can open.

Talking to us

Email hello@redcurtain.com.au. There is also a Log Issues/Suggestion button at the top of the menu on every screen once you are signed in — it reaches us directly, and it is the fastest way to tell us something is broken or that the app is making a job harder than it needs to be.
